June 11, 2012 There are several very good reasons for women to take self defense classes, beginning with the ability to protect themselves in an emergency. The statistics are dire: 78 women in the world are raped every hour; two out of three women will face assaults in their lifetimes, and 80 percent of assaults can be prevented with proper training. In response to that need, Master Bonnie Thiel, of AKF Spring Grove Flying Dragons, is offering a unique self-defense program for women running six weeks and starting Tuesday, June 19. The program, called WISE, "Women Initiating Safe Environments", runs from 6 to 8 p.m. and only costs $99. “Self defense is a good enough reason to take a course like this,” Master Thiel said. “But it also helps women to improve their self esteem and become empowered.” Other reasons to take the course include physical fitness and the opportunity to serve as role models for other women and children. More than just warning others about the risks of domestic and other attacks, a self defense class puts graduates of the class in a better position to break the barrier of silence and shame that often accompany violent attacks. Women and young girls learn to speak out and young males learn about acceptable behavior. Master Thiel is one of three women with 5th Degree Black Belts in the American Kyuki-Do Federation. She has trained in the martial art for 28 years. For more information call 815-675-3504 or visit www.sgflyingdragons.com |
